3D scanning can take a physical object and create a highly accurate 3D model.  This model can be used for taking measurements, reconstructing a scene or constructing digital blueprints for future creations.  One scan can replace hours with a camera and calipers trying to capture all the dimensions of an object.  

The scan below was used for a custom car restoration.  The new car was modeled in solidworks before construction and scans were taken of key pieces to insert into the model.  In this way, the chassis and paneling could be constructed with the confidence.
